!!! -SPRING HAS SPRUNG--ARE YOU READY?!?

With all the extra daylight hours the new DST time change has awarded us, you now have more time to do that long-awaited, spring cleaning of your home or your garage.   But what about your PC?    When was the last time you cleaned it on the inside?   When did you last clean up all the spyware, adware and viruses that may have slowed your computer down to an almost crawl?   Yes, there may be much to clean up, and if you are not comfortable knowing how or what to clean, then consider Digi-Tek's three levels of cleaning services, ranging from $10-->$30.   But why stop there?   Let us optimize your system, and make it run even faster than when you first got it!

Spring is the time to move forward in your computing practices, upgrades, and services.   Give us a hollar and schedule your appointment...

***VITAL MARCH Update!    (March 4th and 13th), 2007

--NEW,   EARLIER   DAYLIGHT   SAVINGS  TIME   CHANGE
CREATES   COMPUTER   GLITCH   THAT   COULD   AFFECT
MILLIONS       OF   COMPUTERS   and   COMPUTER  NETWORKS !!

MOST RECENT DST UPDATES!:

Some cell phone users are reporting being charged for phone calls in excess of 1 hour--due to the Daylight Savings Time computer problems. Be sure to scrutinize your bill when you get it. On the computer front, most problems after the Sunday switch have been related to calendaring in Outlook, with appointments being off by an hour. In some cases, people reported agenda errors despite installing Microsoft's fixes, probably because of dependencies on the calendars of people who had not yet applied the updates. The Sans Internet Storm Center, which tracks network threats, received several reports of DST-related issues. One person reported a problem with American Power Conversion's Powerchute software, resulting in a scheduled reboot happening an hour later. Another reported that Cisco Systems' phones displayed the incorrect time. Other issues logged by Sans include cell phones and atomic clocks not updating, Symantec Backup Exec starting backups an hour early, and WatchGuard security software reporting incorrect times, which can result in inaccurate activity logs.

"Nothing earth-shattering or causing the Internet to crash and burn, however it is making things a little tense for some folks," Sans staffer Deborah Hale wrote on the Internet Storm Center blog.

According to Eweek, this year's daylight-saving time change is causing major frustration for IT administrators running Microsoft programs that need to be individually patched to reflect the change. Others, like Robert Rosen, the CIO of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and an eWEEK corporate partner, say they think the vendors waited too long to get started on DST patches and updates.

He told Microsoft Watch that "Microsoft in particular requires operating system patches and then Outlook calendar modifications. That makes no sense. If they were storing in Coordinated Universal Time, the operating system patch should have fixed the calendars automatically," he said.

"This has created an absolute nightmare situation. The time differences between the operating system patch and the Outlook fix created a window to cause more calendar entries to be in error," Rosen said.

Making matters worse is the fact that some customers say that Microsoft's phone support is also overwhelmed with callers trying to resolve their DST patch issues, with many users put on hold for hours before actually talking to someone, if they get through at all. -One post from customer on the Microsoft DST chat said, "This is INSANE. I buy a standard product for 2500 bucks and then I get a note telling me to update it for a problem known for a couple years. And the patch screws up my system. How long will my appointments be shifted? For three weeks now and two weeks at the end of "old" dst?"

-Now, on to the original article...

The President of the United States, and the Canadian government--recently made the first change to Daylight Savings Time (DST) in over 20 years.  Under the new rules, the second Sunday in March is when DST will always occur.   Wherein this might 'sound' OK... There IS--a problem that could affect very many consumers and businesses:   UNLESS your computer or computers run on Microsoft Vista--OR--If you have Windows XP, but do NOT have Service Pack 2 installed--Then you WILL BE affected!

-This effect to the general consumer could range from the simplest of VCR programming issues, to more significant synchronization issues on the computing front: E-mail problems, server and network access, inability to log into applications, access to major E-commerce websites in order to transact, disruptions of normal operations of online auctions, etc.  This includes computers running XP with SP1, Windows 2000, and Windows ME.  In addition, for those of you running earlier versions of Windows, since Microsoft Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, there is now no official 'patch' that changes the date/time when DST takes effect.   Unfortunately, there are still millions of Windows 98 machines in use out in the world--And that could mean YOU may be one of those users...  -Make sure you have this necessary patch BEFORE March 11, 2007 comes around.

According to Tamara Schweitzer of Inc.com, "Everything from appointment times to banking transactions could be affected by this switch, and with so many businesses relying on the regulation of an internal clocking system, technology experts are bracing for the upcoming glitches.

"The worst case is that it will wreak all kinds of havoc on your network," said Mark Arnold, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Master Key Consulting, a Bethesda, Md.-based information-technology firm. "You could have employees who aren't able to sign in to the network or you could lose data. A lot of things could go wrong."

-You may wonder WHERE can you find a Windows 98/ME/XP/Vista patch for Daylight Saving Time?;   Well, you have come the right place: Digi-Tek Computer is happy to provide you this free resource.   And it is very simple to use--If you are using Windows 2000/XP/Vista, just click on the following shortcut link and visit this Windows Update site;   -But if you are looking for a Windows 98 update - Microsoft won't help you.   ("Thanks for nothing, Mr. Gates...")

-But don't worry!-- Digi-Tek SURE can!   You can choose manual override of the system clock, or you can click on the Windows 98 patch found right here (Win'98 FIX) - This patch will link you to how to edit your computer's Registry entries that determine WHEN  DST becomes effective.  ***-But word of caution though!***   -We HIGHLY recommend BACKING UP your registry--FIRST!   (IF you are at ALL unsure of editing your Registry--then this fix ABSOLUTELY should be done by a professional.   -Mistakes in your computer's Registry can SERIOUSLY disable your computer or its functionality!).  -But have no fear--You have come to the right place!

Our 12-station, highly-trained, Service Department will be more than happy to apply the patch, and also perform any other cleanup, upgrade or maintenance that your PC more than likely needs.   -And you will soon then find out why thousands of other East Tennesseans and South Kentuckians trust their computers to Digi-Tek!   -Just stop by, or give us a call if you have ANY questions.  -And remember, every time that DST rolls around--these four things: 1) Spring Forward, 2) Change your smoke alarm batteries, 3) Get your computer cleaned and tuned, and, 4) 'For ALL Your Computer Needs--Did YOU check, with Digi-Tek?!'

***-FEBRUARY 5, 2007 'Tek-Thought-To-Ponder'...!

!!! -NOT ALL *VISTA'S* OFFER THE BEST VIEW!!!

Our ability to run our customer's credit cards dramatically slowed down the day Microsoft released it's first new operating system in five years.   -As thousands--most likely, 'millions', went out and without really thinking, paid the Window's giant an extra surcharge of $50 over what they paid for their comparable Windows XP, for the privilige of being the first generation of guinea pigs to use, enmasse, this latest version of Hollywood Glam meets Microsoft 'Ho-Hum';  I have to wonder just how long it is going to take before this cat is out of the bag and the real 'damage control' begins, in force..?

-Wherein five years is a VERY long time in-between major releases; I am also a proponent of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..."   And although XP is far from perfect, it beats '98 hands down for stability, and with all the other 'software-issues' in the market, plus all the "malware tsunammi's" drowning what precious little time that most computer users have--WHO has time to deal with NEW incompatibilites, 'lack of drivers issues', even MORE wasted time, and very little 'bang for buck' fallout..?    I find a LOT of websites that absolutely CHOKE on IE-7..!    If I can't even count on basic surfing to work as reliably as my original XP works--Then WHY would I want to cripple myself--JUST because it LOOKS really cool..?!

I say, Vista's Project Manager must've been spoon-fed 'MTV' and 'Insider Edition'.    We need Function--NOT 'strapless/backless' Form.  -Our advice on this good ship, Lollipop--is to instead--"Stay the course, trim the sails, and head into the wind."   I don't like what is on the horizon...  --Remember what they say about sailors, and red skies in the morning?  It be best to heed that warning...

January 19, 2007**"JACKS, CRACKS, & Digi-FACTS!**

First, JACKS: DC Jacks, that is...    Digi-Tek is doing more and more laptop DC jack replacement jobs, than ever before.    These are the little connectors located in the back of your laptop--which you plug your AC adapter into--in order to power up your laptop.    These are so poorly designed by those 'great' major players--Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, etc.--That it is not simply a matter of 'if' they should break, but simply a matter of 'WHEN' they will break...     Their symptoms are very clear--You have to wiggle your power adapter's connector in order to get your unit to turn on--Or else you suddenly lose power if the connection is not in 'just' the right place--or your battery quits taking a charge...    This is a very serious and expensive repair.   -But it becomes even MORE expensive if you ALLOW this condition to continue, unfixed.     It can and will--physically end up 'melting' the circuit traces around the jack on the motherboard--(And laptop motherboards range from $3-400 on the low end--up to $700)--A totally unnecessary expense--IF--you INSTEAD, brought it in to be fixed--at the FIRST signs of symptoms.    Digi-Tek repairs all the East Tennessee DC jack jobs for all the customers from the major computer chain stores such as CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit city, etc.

Next, in the realm of "CRACKS":  Microsoft's long overdue, Vista 64-bit Operating System is about to come out to the masses.   Is it everything it is supposed to be 'cracked' up to be..?  --Our position?    One word:   WAIT.    Like Shakespeare said, "Much ado about nothing." It's a lot of glitz and glamour, with little punch to really make it worth your while.   It completely lacks 'bang for buck'--costing anywhere from $50-$100 more for it's similar counterpart in XP.  Add to that, the mere fact that its sheer requirements practically require a new computer--the majority of users couldn't use it even if they wanted it.     It comes in eight varieties--as opposed to XP's only two. The only real 'bang for buck' choice, is 'Ultimate'.

But Vista (including Ultimate) has a very disturbing 'security-enhancement' feature known as 'Bit-Locker'.    The problem with it is that if your motherboard should die, or if you want to swap hard drives--You will find you've just been royally screwed:   -Three very bad things come into play: 1) Your ability to access your data on your hard drive now goes down the tube, with Bitlocker. (Essentially--if your motherboard dies, so does your data)  2) You can no longer move hard drives from one Vista machine to another--Bitlocker will think it is stolen and prevent access to your data.  and 3) Replacing either a failed motherboard or drive will now cost you much more. Replacement mobo's must have specific features required by Bitlocker--Thusly eliminating cheaper motherboard replacement choices.  -And data recovery attempts on such drives, could very well become impossible.  In essence, the very security protection you hoped to have, has now taken a giant bite out of your own behind!  -Our advice?--Leave Vista to the first generation of anxious and foolish users to debug. You--Wait for Gen2...

Lastly, "FACTS--Digi-FACTS!" --December and January have been good to us: "Digi-Tek Computer" continues to grow strong with brisk business and many new customers this time of the year--our busiest!   -Now, at this time last year, we opened a Cincinnatti, Ohio office.   This year, we're happy to announce a presence in Lexington, Kentucky!  -So whereever, or whatever your computing needs are--Digi-Tek is here, to serve you...  -Call '865-924-2330' for any of your computing needs in Lexington.    -Till next time, stay warm, be cool, and be happy...

***-DECEMBER 6, 2006 'Tek-Thought-To-Ponder'...!

!!! -DON'T BE *TAKEN* THIS MONTH!!!
Every single brick and mortar store that occupies anything from a tiny crevice in a strip mall to the major 'Big Boys--PLUS--Every single ONLINE legit and illegitimate computer outfitter--Is going to barrage you with a never-ending plethora of 'in-your-face' ads, emails, faxes and other contact media--in order to get you to spend your hard-earned money--WITH THEM!      -SOMETIMES,  These guys and gals will INTENTIONALLY design their ad or promotion to convince you that you are getting a special deal--even though you most likely are not.    --For instance, last year, they lowered prices on laptops and computers--But if you read the fine print--You'd have found out that you were actually paying full price, up front--But that you'd get a rebate on the back end. The BAD news was that the rebate meant you were locked in to a 2-year AOL membership--at a monthly price that worked out to be just around the rebate discount--Meaning you got ZIP of a discount--You got absolutely TAKEN by these slicksters! --THIS year, their game is THIS: You pay full price up front--But you get the discount ONLY if you ALSO buy the latest Cell Phone--which is ALSO a 2-Year plan to lock you in to a monthly pocket hit which equates to DOUBLE the whammy these guys tried to 'sock it to you' LAST YEAR!'

Want to hear about the OTHER scams and tricks they're playing?    --First off, if you are any bit of a serious computer user--and the computer their hawking is a 'Celeron'--FORGET IT!     -They are the bottom-end of the processor 'food chain', and are really only adequate for little kids, retired, non-serious older folk, and novices.     Secondly, they will prominently display 'real good deals', but again, the fine print says 'Limited Quantities'--and that means 2-3 for a city of several hundred thousand people. Ridiculous...     Thirdly, if what you want to buy has a rebate--Understand these shocking statistics:     ONLY 15% of rebates are ever actually redeemed in full back into the purchasers hands!     And of those--only 3-5% are processed without a hitch. Class-Action lawsuits have been iin the works for these mass-processing companies who appear to intentionally 'kick-out' rebates, and eventually wear down the consumer--so that your money is eventually 'given up' on...     (Rebates are great--IF you have the time, patience and determination, to see them through this trying process...)

Lastly, another 'new trick' they're doing this year, is depriving you of a real Window's XP operating system, and giving you systems with Windows 'Media Edition'--a hacked-up version of what originally was XP PRO, but then they ripped you off even deeper and have now been making Media Ed. from a stripped-down version of XP Home.

-At Digi-Tek, we don't carry or build the CHEAPEST computers. WE say--"Don't buy a real cheap computer--INSTEAD--Buy a REAL computer--Cheap!"   -So, if these kind of scams and lies offend you--as they righteously so should--Then come on into our store, and let us quote you a system or provide you a part or service for your machine. We won't deceive you, or make you buy something else that you don't need, in order to get a lower price.          -You'll simply get good honest service and products, at a fair and reasonable price. --See YOU, at the shop...

-September 30, 2006 'DIGI-UPDATE'
*** "SCAMS, PLANS, & TRUST...
Let's begin with 'Scams': You know what you know, from what you've read, seen or heard whether those sources be books, magazines, friends, coworkers teachers, radio, TV or the Internet.    Any one can say any thing and whether that be true or false, is simply a matter of trust.

I am here today to tell you "Be very, very careful, when making that trust decision." Marketers, whether they be commercials, packaging specialists, etc.--get paid real good money to present their products or service, in the best light for THEM!   -But, YOU, the consumer, are just fodder for these fiery lions.    The saying, There's a sucker born every minute is attributed to P.T. Barnum.   The saying is so very true.    We consumers cannot be up on every single thing or technology out there, so we most easily fall victim to these intentionally deceptive tactics.

Take for instance Dual-Channel memory.      In the beginning, like you, we believed these separate memory sticks we purchased at a higher price were indeed, special, or at least, different than standard memory sticks.   Fact of the matter is, they are not.    The definite advantage (~25% or more increase in throughput) of dual-channel, is controlled by the dual-channel-capable motherboard, alone.    You can stick any two, same branded RAM in such a motherboard, and , voila, you are successfully running dual-channel memory.  It's pure marketing 'deception' that makes you think otherwise...

Let's move on now, to the rest of this article's title, 'Plans': -Now that October has rolled in on us, let me share with you, our plans:   Digi-Tek will be closed on Monday, Oct. 2, and will also be closed from Sunday October 8-14.font color="DARKBLUE" size="1">    We will reopen as normal, on Sunday, October 15th.    -We are closed during these periods, because the owners of Digi-Tek trust in God-- and will be observing the Feast of Tabernacles Holy Day period, mentioned in the Bible in Leviticus 23:39-43, Numbers 29:12, John 7:1-52, and in Zechariah 14     -In the business world, it would be considered financially ludicrous for any retail business to shut down for a week or more, in order to observe any mainstream religious holiday--much less for a comparatively, more obscure one.

So, what does that say about Digi-Tek?    It shows the world that Digi-Tek trusts and loves the Lord our God, more than finances, its own gain, and that it fears and respects God's laws.

And how does that therefore translate down to you?   It means Digi-Tek truly believes in the Ten Commandments, and operates its business, and treats its customers, in the way that God means for his people to deal with one another, in the finest of Judeo-Christian principles, and expecting the same in return.   And that hinge-pin that makes this all possible is Trust. -You can trust our advice, our service, and our dedication in providing you the very best, in everything we do.

*** ADDING ADDITIONAL RESOURCES TO KNOXVILLE! ***

***-AUGUST 12, 2006 'Tek-Thought-To-Ponder'... August 9, 2006!
!!! -BE A *SMART* PC CONSUMER!!!
'Ignorance'--Is not necessarily a personal deficit, nor a first choice.      SOMETIMES,   --No, OFTEN TIMES--a professional vendor or manufacturer will INTENTIONALLY craft an ad or promotion to make you 'think' you're getting a really great deal--even though you really are not. But that is why they are professionals. Here is one instance of how they take advantage of the common consumer: At Digi-Tek, we custom build--REAL--computers--not cheap 'compromises', like Dell, E-Machine, Dell, Gateway, and others do... If SHORT-TERM price is your #1 focus, then we'd have no other choice than to point you to Wal-Mart and buy one of their bottom-line, low-priced, piece of junk, name- brand PC's. (We repair them in our service shop--ALL the time...) -You'll get what you paid for. No ability to seriously upgrade down the road, no room for serious expansion, and low- quality, OEM parts with minimal warranties. Such things, like video, will be integrated into the motherboard,--which steals from the little bit of RAM they give you, and robs your CPU of its horsepower.

-However, if you want to SAVE money, and buy ONE computer that will serve your needs for at least five years, and, be totally upgradeable for the years to come--AND--have warranties in 'years'--and not 'days'--THEN, absolutely, let us quote you a system. But we will not voluntarily build you a 'garbage system', unless you ABSOLUTELY insist--and pay for it in advance.

We also offer the absolute BEST warranty in the industry--At no charge--you get 1 yr, wherein should you ever have a problem, you don't even have to bring the computer to us--We will come to you--at no charge--(assuming you live in Knoxville), to handle any potential hardware issues. And even if you accidentally messed up--or caught a virus--we will perform software service-- for the incredibly low price of only $20 per half hour, during the warranty period.

-So, it is a foolish and self-defeating perspective, to allow price-alone, to dictate where you buy your next computer from. As we always say, "Don't buy a 'real' cheap computer--Buy a REAL computer, CHEAP..!"

--TOTALLY SLAMMED !

-For the past month and a half, our Knoxville, TN location has been "totally slammed"--with a level of business and computer upgrades and repairs that we've not seen in QUITE some time! -We have most definitely seen a noticable drop in computer hardware quality--coupled with a dramatic increase in virus damage and spyware/malware activity. This has forced us to *temporarily* not be able to provide our standard guarantee of a 48 hour 'Initial Diagnostic' update, (except only for those able/willing to pay for our "Priority Level" Service). -But there is a very good reason why we are continue to maintain this level of elevated business, despite not being able to currently guarantee we can turn your computer around within a week: -There is no other computer shop in Knoxville, who can deliver the level of computer service, competence and value--hands down. -So, we apologize in advance for any incovenience this may cause you, but we will continue to service your computer needs, as best as we continue to do...

The 'Digi-Hi-Tek' Industry BLOG--Status: America--The 'Katrina-Effect:'
"What's Love Gotta Do With It?",
-or-

"Bush, Katrina, The Gulf Coast, Gasoline,& Iraq..."

Date:9/14/2005

   It, IS...all about--'Sacrifice'.

-What, you might ask, is this 'all’, I am referring to?   --Well, how about the massive loss and damage endured by the residents and businesses of the Gulf Coast, by that heartless, 'Monster-ess', known as--‘Katrina’?

-And aren’t those people, sacrificing—just to survive and overcome?   Aren’t the recovery efforts by everyone from around the country that have been, or are down there, to lend assistance—also testaments of 'living' sacrifices?

-And then you have President Bush, having to make tough decisions--and figuring out how to fight a war overseas—and, deal with America’s  sometimes, uncertain economy—While also fighting a 'somewhat' invisible enemy—(whom we sanitize with the by-word, ‘Terrorism’)  -Most recently had to come up with the finances and the strategic, coordination efforts and manpower, to help hundreds of thousands of innocent Americans—to get back to 'Square One'—(And in some cases)—to have to 'start all over', again…

And are our young men and women over in Iraq—not ‘sacrificing’?  As are their families here in the states—who are likewise, 'sacrificing’—as well?  -And are not every one of you, not also sacrificing—when we pay three dollars or more per gallon, for gasoline?

-Of course, we are.   It is--all about sacrifice.

But what’s my point?   It is--this:  Everyone is so involved in helping in some way, in sacrificing in some way, in needing, in some way—That NO ONE, is REALLY, seeing what is REALLY going on!!

--When 9-11 unfolded—We stood there--shocked, in utter disbelief.  Our feet were almost frozen—and numbingly, we, the masses, came to do what Americans do best—Help those who need us the most…

But something’s different with this disaster.  Something has changed inside of America.

-And as, good ol' 'Martha',  would say: “It’s a good, thing…”

The American people—did not ‘freeze’.  (Now, some may say the U.S. Government did... —But that’s a matter for 'another' discussion…) But the American people, sprung into action, and churches and businesses—didn’t waste a minute, in starting efforts to help the Hurricane victims.  The American people were not shell-shocked, nor--stood around, incredulous.  Victims themselves became heroes, as they risked their own lives, trying to save others.  Even a six year old little boy—became a hero, saving many other children, by leading them--and being an example.

The aftermath of Katrina—showed the World—and the rest of America—just what it REALLY means, to be an American.  -Good, ol’ Yankee ingenuity kicked in—even inside these grief-stricken 'Southerners'—who fashioned unique floating devices in order to get by... And they manually pumped life-support systems for hospitalized babies and injured folk... And even the elderly had the gumption to break through attics and rooftops with makeshift axes, in order to seek survival.

It was a bitter moment—without a doubt....  (-And Yes--'some', lacking the judiciousness and appropriateness—absolutely did take advantage of the situation, by looting more than just Life's daily 'staples'--Spotlighting to the World--BY, their utterly selfish actions--the 'dark shadow' reality--that the worst in humanity still thrives among us…)  -BUT, let’s not let the FEW, take away what is rightfully deserved—by the MANY..!

--Despite the overwhelming tragedy of human suffering--It WAS--ALSO--a crowning moment for our NATION..!--Because, collectively, we showed a side of ourselves to the World--which they don't normally see displayed in the media:

--AMERICANS:  -Stand PROUD in your steadfast Determination and Endurance.  -Revel in your Ingenuity and Faith.  -But MOST of all—UNDERSTAND—the difference in your reaction--when this disaster unfolded--compared to your behavior, when those Twin Towers, burnt and crashed to the ground, a few years earlier…

-YOU, have GROWN—in a way, you may not have fully realized.  You-- have matured, socially, in a way you may not have understood--you have been undergoing a schooling over these past several years..

-And, You--have now been weaned from off of the milk of innocence; and, instead, you have--stood on your own—neither afraid, nor--frozen—But, steadfast and utterly determined..!
---------------------------------------
-Yes, -sometimes, we can be too focused,  and/or, we can be soo close to the forest...to see the trees--That we simply do not—nor, can not—See, just where we— really...are!

Lee Greenwood was right: -Be PROUD, you’re an American.  -Go ahead, and pat yourselves on the back:

-For much is expected of us.   And much—we will do...

"Free Diagnostics... Oh, Really?!?

Date: 5/3/2005

They advertise it—like a bass fisherman dangling fresh worms for ’Mr. Fishy’ –One bite, and you’ve been hooked!   -You, went after what looked like a real good deal—but you find yourself, being ‘reeled in’…

“What?!,” you say, “I’ve never heard of this ‘spyware’ and ‘adware’—What computer geek, ‘gobble-dee-gook’ are you trying to lay on me, now?” -Well, you may not have ‘heard’ of them, but I guarantee, you have been dealing with them--if you own a computer and have used it to surf the Internet in the past year or two… -Have you not noticed how much slower your system’s become lately? Ever wonder why your computer takes so much longer to boot now, than when you first got it? -They’re sitting right there under your fingertips—robbing your computer of precious CPU power, stability and slowing your system down tremendously. And they do FAR worse than that…

What’s so ‘bad’—about ‘Free Diagnostics’?  Well, never forget the old adages:  “You Get What You Pay For’; and, ‘If It’s Too Good To Be True—It Isn’t’. -They’ve stood the test of Time, for a real good reason.

-Think about it:  Do your professional doctors offer this approach?  -Of course not.  No surgeon, no cardiologist and no oncologist, would ever attempt to claim they could properly diagnose a problem inside you, without first running an initial examination, followed up by a specific battery of tests.

Your computer is as complicated as a human being.  It too, is composed of systems and sub-systems, all interacting with—and in reaction tooother sub-systems.  –See the many parallels between the CPU or processor, the hard drive, the motherboard and the video card; as with: your brain, memory, heart and eyes.

It is absolutely presumptuous—for any one claiming to be a competent tech—to be able to render a properly accurate and correct diagnostic on a computer—without first opening up the case and performing an in-depth examination, and/or  also--bringing the system up and spending enough time working with the software and hardware, to understand the true nature of the problem.  -These steps can take anywhere from twenty to forty-five minutes to properly perform.  –If any computer shop is performing this amount of work for you at no charge (standardly $60-$85)—then they are doing one, or a number of, these common scams:

1)       Making up for this loss, by charging you ‘out the yin-yang’, elsewhere…

2)       Guessing at what they think is wrong—and either try a multitude of fixes until they get it right (charging, or not charging you for their incorrect first guess and/or, lack of experience)—OR, they either perform a System Restore—(what we call, ‘civil war surgery’) and unnecessarily wipe out all  your saved data and programs since purchasing the computer—OR—they lie and tell you your system is simply not worth repairing…

3)       Coming up with whatever diagnostic condition they feel is either plausible, or that you’d be willing to swallow--and when they later find out that they were wrong, they again—resort to the inexcusable, indiscriminate use of what should be the absolute last line of defense: the System Restore.

(The rule of thumb, as to whether your computer is worth repairing or not—is that if you can buy a new, equivalent or better computer, for twice the price your repair is going to cost, then it is not worth repairing—UNLESS, your data, or some piece of hardware or software on that computer—cannot be moved over or used, on the new one.)

-So, IF—your computer shop guy answers your question:  How much time did you spend performing this diagnostic?

—And honestly tells you he spent half an hour or so—and will not be charging you for that time—AND—your repair cost $60/hour or less to fix—and upon getting home—your computer problem is indeed,  fixed ,and stays fixed for a week—then immediately go back, and give that computer guy--a big, fat kiss—‘cuz he’s offering you the best deal around!.

-BUT, if your problem is not fixed—or his way of fixing it cost you to lose data or your programs, or--you paid way more than $60/hr.—or, the problem comes back without you installing other programs or downloading new files—Then, my friend—you just got--taken…for a ride…

-Whether it is a professional doctor, or a computer technician—quick or free diagnostics—is a joke.  If any professional doctor were good enough to made such accurate calls, without first having to invest a chunk of their valuable time investigating—you can be, darn sure, they would be charging you for it—and charging you--well.

At Digi-Tek Computer, we are proud to say we always charge for our diagnostics—anywhere from $15-$45—and then—and only then--we offer you an accurate estimate, based on those facts and findings.  We would never—offer or advertise—‘free diagnostics’—and then quote you a price, for  that ‘quickie’ guess of a repair.

–Now, we’d be more than glad to present you, at no charge, our best, educated style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'guess what a repair might cost--based on the symptoms you’ve described—but we’d never, attach a monetary value to that guess—because doing so, would be most very--unfair and unprofessional--to you, and/or, to us…

"An Evil No One Talks About", Date: 05/27/04

inside—and you just knew—you just felt—something just wasn’t right… -No, I’m not talking about witches, goblins, monsters, or any of that Halloween nonsense. I’m talking about something that I personally feel, is far more evil, more damaging, and more insidious—than a computer virus. –“What could be worse than a virus that locks up my system, or reboots it whenever I surf, or corrupts my files?”, you ask. Well, I’ll tell you: -I’m talking about ‘spyware’ and ‘adware’.

-Ever heard of ‘spam’? -Nah, not that canned excuse for virtual meat—but spam—those filthy, never-ending emails that fill up your ISP’s servers and your mailbox, faster than you can empty it. And those most annoying, incessant pop-up ads, that breed like rabbits on your screen—mostly at the worst time, like when you’re trying to meet some deadline. These are the result of ‘adware’—little, file-like critters that are placed on your computer when you download a program, song or movie, sometimes. They’re like remora—those symbiotic, sucker fish which ‘hang around’ shark, just behind their neck--hoping to feed on a morsel of loose fishy that falls off the shaken prey being gobbled up in Mr. Shark’s vicious jaws. Adware ‘hangs’ in those area of the Web, where most people ‘trade’ songs and movies and applications; or wherever one goes to find ‘drivers’ for various computer hardware.

These files sit there and incessantly monitor who you are, and which websites you go to, and what items you look at or buy, and then transmits that information to it’s host site—the sender—who then NOW knows better, WHAT kind of ads to blast you with, and WHICH items might make you take THEIR bait!

“Spyware” is even more blatantly evil: It gets on your machine the same way as adware, but it’s function is entirely more dangerous—It sits there monitoring keystrokes, among other things, recording--like I just mentioned above—and more... –That means, it can record your: passwords, credit card information, social security numbers—just about anything you type in. -And I’ll leave you one guess what information it’s sending it’s host and sender... –I’ll give you a ‘for instance’: Digi-Tek Computer is beginning its third year of growth and expansion. We are heavy Internet users, performing a lot of e-commerce/web purchasing. We have never had a security incident in all that time—that is, until early this past summer, when we had one of our credit card numbers stolen on the Internet. It was professionals—because they used our credit card info, to order a computer off the Net, to be shipped to Chicago, and they used a computer in San Franscisco, to make the transaction. That ‘Frisco computer, was owned by an innocent woman—who had no idea her PC was being commandeered remotely, by high-tech thieves, who placed such files we been talking about, on her computer without her knowledge. –Have you ever noticed your hard drive light blinking like crazy when no one is at the computer—and you click your mouse and nothing is on-screen, and none of your programs are running? Now, think about that—knowing now—what I just taught you...

Yes, you, more likely than not,--right now—have adware, or spyware—or both—running on your computer, decreasing its potential & performance—and putting your patience, frustration and finances, at long-term risk. -And some of these ‘files/programs’, are even designed to ‘borrow’ from your computer’s processor, just enough ‘cpu cycles’, so that you’d barely notice. And they do this to hundreds and thousands of others—giving these callous programmers/hackers—enough computing horsepower--to allow them to have for themselves—virtual ‘super-computers’—courtesy of your ignorance and tolerance.

What can you do about it? Knowledge is power, for one. Now you know. You’ve been informed. If you’re smart, you’ll be extremely cautious, when venturing in such virus-testing grounds, as “KaZaA “. -After ‘borrowing’ your music from such sites as “Imesh’, ‘Bearshare’, and ‘Limewire’, you’ll immediately run the anti-adware/spyware software that should be installed on your system along with your Anti-Virus software—and run as often. -If you suspect your systems been compromised, and you do not have the knowledge or skill to find, download and run ‘anti-spyware/adware’ software—and set such up on a daily, or at a minimum, weekly maintenance schedule, then you need to bring your computer into a professional and reputable computer repair shop, such as Digi-Tek, for a complete and thorough scanning and removal. (Digi-Tek is all about teaching, and not, making money) We will not charge you for the anti-spyware/adware software that we will install on your system. (A thorough scan and removal/cleaning can take about an hour on a 40GB, 1GHz system--at $30/hf. hr—[Knoxvilles lowest labor rate]—it could be, the cheapest way to speed your computer up, without having to pop the cover!) –And, you will then be armed, with the software ammunition—to defend your computer—from those wanting to violate your personal privacy.
